W-4 Checkup Calculator

Enter your wages and what each paycheck withholds. The calculator projects your April outcome and names the exact extra-per-check fix while there is still time to fix it.

The W-4 is the most-ignored form in the stack, and December is the last chance to change it: whatever is withheld by December 31 is what counts this year. A ten-minute paystub checkup turns a surprise April bill into a one-line fix on the payroll portal.

–projected tax bill (or refund)
–rough tax for the year
–already withheld by today
–extra per check fixes it
April refund instead? Reshape the refund into each paycheck.

How to use

  1. Annual wages from your offer letter or last pay stub annualized.
  2. Paycheck frequency and the federal amount actually withheld - the W-4 you filled on day one did the rest.
  3. Read the projection and the per-check fix: line 4(c) on the W-4 takes the number. Updates live.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my W-4 is correct?

Project it: rough tax for the year minus what will actually be withheld by December 31. Inside a thousand dollars is the goal - a bigger shortfall means penalties risk, a bigger overage means the government held your money all year interest-free. This calculator does the projection from two paystub numbers.

How do I add extra withholding to my paycheck?

W-4 line 4(c): write the extra dollars per check. It flows through payroll within a cycle or two and stops the April shortfall before the December 31 cutoff. Payroll portals host the form - no HR meeting required.

Is a big tax refund good?

It is your own money returned without interest after a year-long loan to the Treasury. Some people like the forced savings; if you would rather have it each payday, raise the W-4 step-3 credits or add deductions at step 4(b). Both are legal; one pays rent sooner.

What is the safe harbor rule for underpayment?

Withhold at least 90 percent of this year tax, or 100 percent of last year (110 percent at higher incomes), and the IRS waives underpayment penalties regardless of what you owe in April. The calculator flags when your pace misses that line.
