Strip Hashtags and Mentions

Token-level and proud of it: only whole words that START with # or @ go - so C# keeps its hash, email addresses keep their at-sign, and the false-positive count stays at zero. The toggles are independent: strip tags, keep the names; strip names, keep the archive. Cleanup family: remove emoji, remove punctuation, and smart quotes converter.
The cleanup family so far: remove punctuation, remove accents, remove emoji, strip hashtags, and extract numbers if the digits were the point all along.

Social posts arrive wearing their metadata: Great game! #flawless @refyoulookedaway - and reposting that into an article, a newsletter or a report means stripping the #hashtags and @mentions out. This tool does it in one pass with two independent switches: drop the hashtags, drop the mentions, or both - and the leftover double spaces get tidied so the sentence reads like it never had tags at all.

The boundary cases are where this earns its place: C# survives because a hashtag mid-word is not a tag, email addresses survive because @mid-word is not a mention - only whole tokens starting with the symbol go. The counter reports how many tags and mentions were removed, everything runs in this browser tab, and nothing uploads.

How to use

  1. Paste the social text - cleaned output appears live with counts for tags and mentions removed.
  2. Toggle which to strip: hashtags, mentions, or both - each switch works independently.
  3. Copy the clean text; spaces are tidied where removed tags left gaps.

Frequently asked questions

How do I remove hashtags from text?

Paste it above with the hashtags toggle on - every whole word starting with # disappears, along with the gap it leaves. The tool works at the token level: a hashtag is a word that begins with #, so it catches #flawless at the end of a sentence and #blessed wedged mid-post, while leaving # inside words untouched.

Will it break C# or email addresses?

No - that is the design line. C# keeps its hash because the # is mid-word, not leading; an email like [email protected] keeps its @ because the @ is mid-word, not leading a token. Only whole tokens that START with # or @ are treated as tags and mentions. The examples table shows both survivors so the behavior is checkable before you paste anything precious.

Why tidy the spaces after removal?

Because pulling a tag out of the middle of a sentence leaves two spaces where one belonged: Great game #flawless today would read Great game today. The tool collapses those gaps so the sentence reads as if the tag was never there. Tags at the start or end of a line leave no orphans at all.

Can I strip only hashtags and keep the mentions?

Yes - the two toggles work independently. Strip hashtags but keep @mentions when the names matter to your repost; strip mentions but keep hashtags when the tags ARE the archive. Both on (the default) gives the fully clean version for prose contexts.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No - the strip runs entirely in this browser tab, with no server, no logging and no account. Your text stays in the page's local storage on your own device (up to 20,000 characters) so a refresh does not lose it, and nothing leaves your machine unless you copy it out yourself.
