Frequently asked questions
How much is sterling silver worth per gram?
Melt value is purity times spot divided by 31.1035: at 30 per troy ounce, 925 silver runs about 0.89 per gram, 999 bullion about 0.96. Multiply by weight for the melt total.
Why do dealers pay less than spot?
They carry refining costs, testing risk and market movement between buying and melting. Fair scrap offers sit at 85-95% of melt; below that, walk - and get quotes from two dealers minimum for anything over a few hundred grams.
Is my old cutlery worth more as silverware?
Often yes: full canteens by known makers and antique pieces carry collector value above melt. Check sold listings on two marketplaces before selling anything with a date, portrait or maker mark by weight.
What is the difference between plated and sterling?
Sterling is 92.5% silver all the way through; plated ware is a few microns of silver over base metal. A magnet is a quick screen (silver is not magnetic), but the hallmark is the verdict - no 925 or 999 mark, assume plate.
