Opening times are the quiet half of election day. While closing times get the television graphics, the opening hour decides whether you can vote before a shift, before school run, or before the line builds at lunch. The chart above lists the opening hour for every state on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, in the state's own local time โ the hour you actually need is the one printed where you live.
Bottom line: 7:00 am local is the national default โ 31 of the 50 states plus DC open then. Vermont's towns can legally open as early as 5:00 am, a dozen states start at 6:00 am, and the all-mail states of Oregon and Washington have no opening hour at all: your ballot was already in the mailbox, and the only deadline that matters is 8:00 pm on election day.
The parenthetical names matter more than they look. Tennessee opens at 7:00 in its Eastern zone but 8:00 in its Central zone; Nebraska is the mirror image, 8:00 Central but 7:00 Mountain. The other two-zone states keep the same opening hour on both sides of the line, which is why the table names the zone only when the hours differ.
Three heavily mail-voting states still staff physical polls โ Colorado, Utah and North Dakota open at the hours shown โ but the practical advice in those states is the same as Oregon and Washington: the safest 'opening time' is weeks earlier, when your ballot arrives. Early in-person voting windows are separate and start much sooner in most states.
How to use
- Find your state in the row matching its local opening hour; zone names in parentheses mark the differing half of a split state.
- Arrive near opening if you vote before work โ lines are shortest in the first hour and rebuild at midday.
- If your state is all-mail or mostly mail, ignore the chart and return your ballot; drop boxes and post offices open before any poll does.
Frequently asked questions
What time do polls open in the earliest states?
Vermont is first: towns may open anywhere from 5:00 am to 10:00 am as each town's board decides. Among fixed hours, a dozen states open at 6:00 am local โ including New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Virginia โ and the remaining majority opens at 7:00 am.
What time do polls open in California and the big states?
California, Texas, Florida, New York and Pennsylvania all open at 7:00 am local. For Texas that means 7:00 Central across most of the state with the western tip on the same hour Mountain time; for Florida, 7:00 on both coasts. The two big states that differ are Nebraska (7:00 Mountain, 8:00 Central) and Tennessee (7:00 Eastern, 8:00 Central).
Why do Oregon and Washington have no opening time?
They conduct elections entirely by mail: every registered voter is sent a ballot weeks ahead, so there is no poll to open. The binding deadline is 8:00 pm on election day for the ballot to be returned or postmarked per state rules. County offices are open earlier for replacements and registration fixes.
Is the opening hour the same everywhere in my state?
Almost everywhere, with three kinds of exceptions: the split-time-zone states named above, New England towns (Vermont especially) with locally set hours, and counties that consolidate small precincts into vote centers whose hours can differ.
