E-Bike Range Calculator
Enter your battery capacity in Wh, your typical assist level, and the reserve you keep. The calculator gives the realistic range in the middle, plus the eco and high-assist extremes - the numbers to plan a commute or a loop around.
Manufacturer range figures assume a light rider, flat terrain and eco mode. Real riding lands 25-40% below the sticker; this calculator starts from usable Wh and honest consumption instead of the brochure.
How to use
- Find the Wh figure on the battery label or spec sheet (voltage ร amp-hours).
- Match the assist style you actually ride - not the one you plan to ride.
- Keep a 10% reserve in the planning figure and compare the result against your longest regular ride.
Frequently asked questions
How far does a 500 Wh e-bike go?
At honest mixed-assist consumption of 15 Wh/km, about 30 km of usable range with a 10% reserve - eco stretches it past 45 km, full assist trims it near 20 km. Winter and hills knock a further 15-25% off.
Why is my real range below the manufacturer figure?
The sticker assumes a 70 kg rider, flat ground, no wind, eco assist and a fresh battery. Add cargo, hills, cold and the highest assist level and a 25-40% shortfall is normal, not a fault.
Does cold weather really cut e-bike range?
Yes - lithium chemistry slows below 10 ยฐC, costing 15-25%, and denser winter air plus studded tyres add drag. The capacity returns when the battery warms; storing and charging it indoors helps.
How should I charge to protect the battery?
Daily rides: charge to 80-90% rather than full, avoid deep discharges, and store around half-charge if the bike rests for weeks. Shallow partial cycles are kind to lithium - the old full-cycle habit belongs to nickel batteries.
