All 145 CSS color keywords with their exact hex values, verbatim from MDN's named-color reference - the same list every browser ships, from aliceblue to yellowgreen. The list carries twins by design: gray and grey, and the notorious trio darkgray / gray / lightgray where darkgray is LIGHTER than gray (a fossil of the original X11 palette). Names are keywords, not values - the browser resolves them at parse time, so they never change even if screens do. Bottom line: rebeccapurple (663399, added 2014 for Eric Meyer's daughter) is the only keyword with a human story, and the only one added by community vote. Apply them: CSS gradient generator, depth box shadow generator, accessibility contrast ratio checker, conversions hex to RGB.

CSS ships 145 color keywords - aliceblue to yellowgreen - that every browser resolves to the same hex value. This table lists them all verbatim from MDN with live swatches, a filter for the name or hex fragment you half-remember, and one-click copy of the exact hex.

The list is older than it looks: it descends from the X11 palette, which is why darkgray (#a9a9a9) is lighter than gray (#808080) and why the aliases gray/grey both work.

How to use

  1. Type a name fragment (gray, #00, fire) to filter the table; swatches render the real value.
  2. Click any row to copy its hex for a stylesheet or design token.
  3. Use the chips to isolate the gray family, the blue-cyan block, and the near-whites.

Frequently asked questions

How many CSS color names are there?

145 keywords in the current spec table (148 counting the gray/grey spelling aliases separately). The original 16 - aqua, black, blue, fuchsia, gray, green, lime, maroon, navy, olive, purple, red, silver, teal, white, yellow - date to HTML 3.2; everything else arrived with CSS2 and the X11 inheritance.

Why is darkgray lighter than gray?

A fossil of the X11 color system, which named shades by feel rather than lightness: darkgray is #a9a9a9, lighter than plain gray at #808080. The CSS working group kept X11 names for compatibility, so the misnomer is now permanent - and a favorite interview question.

What is rebeccapurple?

#663399, added to CSS Color Module Level 4 in 2014 by community vote, honoring Rebecca Meyer, the six-year-old daughter of CSS pioneer Eric Meyer, who died that year. It is the only color name with a person’s story attached, and the only one ever added by consensus after the original set.

Are color names slower or less reliable than hex?

Functionally identical - the browser parses the keyword to the same RGB triplet at parse time. Hex wins for tooling (validators, design tokens, color math), names win for readability in prototypes. One real difference: names cannot express the transparent or currentcolor keywords, which are separate.
